introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my extended project for my first year UAL Extended Diploma in Film and Television Production in the Media Pathway. The Context page of my project portfolio presents the background of my project starting starting with writing about myself; what I have learnt so far on my course, and what inspired my project. This is followed by explaining what my project is about and why it is important. The context page concludes with my project proposal.

WHO AM I?

what have i learnt?

Script Writing - Over the past trimester, I have felt that I have been able to improve my script writing skills, from developing an initial idea to formatting my final script. Throughout the script writing unit, I was able to work with others and independently to create story plots, and then direct actors when reading my script. This unit helped to improve my confidence and enhance my creativity. Evidence of my Script Writing work: Script (whitekaden14.wixsite.com)

Sound - Over the past few trimesters, I feel that I have been able to improve my knowledge of Sound in film. I have been able to identify the differences between Foley sound, background music, and sound effects. I have also learnt about the similarities and differences between Impressionist and Expressionist Sounds. Evidence of my Sound work: The Princess Bride Foley Evaluation (whitekaden14.wixsite.com)

Video Recording - Over the past few trimesters, I have felt that I have had more opportunities to be able to practise my video recording skills. I have used these opportunities to experiment recording from different angles and using different shot types. I would like to continue practising these skills as this is an element that particularly interests me.

The piece of work that I am most proud of so far is my 1 Minute Short Film, ‘VHS’. I felt that this project allowed me to use my own skills creatively and make creative decisions that would impact the final product. Whilst I enjoy working collaboratively with others, for this task, I enjoyed working individually as it allowed me to use several tools that I had recently learnt, such as camera work and editing. I also enjoyed working on the story element for this task. Evidence of my 'VHS' work: 1 Minute Short Film (whitekaden14.wixsite.com)

Based on the work so far, I feel that my strongest medium is Script Writing, and the element that I most enjoy. I feel I am able to successfully formulate interesting and intriguing ideas that often have a strong story and message behind them, whilst also creating quirky characters. When writing my own scripts, I also like to think about what emotions I would like to portray to the viewer and what meaning I would like my script to have.

In contrast to this, the element that I would like to improve on is Editing. Personally, I find the editing software, Avid, difficult to use and would like to learn more about how to navigate the system. Usually, I enjoy editing my videos together, however, for me, Avid currently makes this process unenjoyable.

Final Major Project Ideas:

When considering possible ideas for my Final Major Project, I thought about which elements of the course I have enjoyed so far, and which areas would allow me to advance and better my skills.

Idea 1: Script Writing

Over the course so far, the script writing element has particularly interested me and is something that I am keen to explore further. When thinking about writing a screenplay for my Final Major Project, I am interested in possibly creating a Murder Mystery type story. I feel that by basing my script on this idea it will challenge my skills and expand my creativity. If I was to go forward with this idea, I would be able to enhance further skills within this project, such as character development and storyboarding. It would also allow me to think about multiple aspects that are needed when writing a script, such as, considering the location, the characters, the scenario and the message behind the story.

Idea 2: Colour Theory

Another aspect of the course that I am keen to develop is the use of Colour in film. When researching this topic, I was intrigued at how colour is used to enhance and capture emotions. My idea for this aspect would be to create a short film that focussed on the different emotions that people feel during everyday life. I would use colour as the main storytelling device to portray this to the viewer. Also, I could avoid using large amounts of dialogue to challenge myself to execute the meanings and emotions solely through the use of colour. The basic plot of my story would follow a single person or a group of people who experience different situations throughout their day which inflict their moods and feelings. I would then portray this using colour techniques through the use of props, sets, and costumes.

Idea 3: Foley Sounds

When learning about Sound in film, the aspect that particularly interested me was Foley Work. However, when learning about this, we only recorded Foley Sounds for other films, instead of our own. With this is mind, for this project, I would like to record my own short film, which would follow a short story and a sequence of events, whilst also recording Foley Sounds that would match up to my own footage. The film would use minimal or no dialogue, so that the Foley Sounds are enhanced and the main form of sound. This idea would challenge me to think about the amount of sounds that would be needed to make the film appear natural and realistic.

Final Major Project - Feedback and viability

After generating three possible ideas for my Final Major Project, I gained some feedback from my lecturers and peers to help me make an informed decision as to which idea I would like to go ahead with. I did this by creating a questionnaire and sharing it with others to gain their opinions. I have included the link to the questionnaire below.

After gaining feedback from my peers, I evaluated their responses to help me understand which ideas they thought would be viable. I have included the responses to each idea below.

IDEA 1 RESPONSES:

- This idea is very manageable.

- This is a good idea, I suggest to be careful with Murder Mystery, don't get yourself tingled from everybody that comes with it.

- Good way of keeping the viewers engaged but you will need to have very good writing and time to effectively direct your actors

- Idea 1 has the most potential and most creative aspirations.

- Strengths its different and you can get a lot of amazing ideas from this. The Weaknesses of this is that it might be hard to come up with a 5 page script, with different characters. I think idea 1 is strongest idea due to the fact it is different and you can get a lot of amazing ideas from it. Murder Mystery sounds fund and enjoyable to do.

IDEA 2 RESPONSES:

- Colour is awesome to use in films, there's so many things you can do with it and the results can be great!

- I really like the idea and I like the originality of the concept. Due to your skills with camera, framing and composition, I think you could execute this idea well. I think that this idea would require more experimentation in comparison to the other two ideas as you may need to experiment on Avid with colour correction but this could form part of your research. Really interesting idea again.

- Very small crew seems like a good idea you will be able to act quickly but sounds like you will need a vast amount of props and costuming which will need storage and take time to source.

- Good idea, could be difficult to find props.

- I like the idea of looking at how colour relates to different emotions.

IDEA 3 RESPONSES

- I like the idea. The Foley sounds would require experimentation. I think you could make the story really simple and record the Foley sounds again in post-production.

- Yeah, I agree. Sound is known to be the largest part of a movie so that'll be cool to investigate.

- Foley can be incredible useful to creating an immersive performance but its difficult to get it done correctly.

- Viable idea, maybe try to include other sounds as well.

- I think this would be a fun and enjoyable project to do with the strengths being you can choose what ever you want to do and have some fun with it. I think the weaknesses of this would be it might be hard to find a good clip to do Foley for.

Lecturer Feedback

When discussing my three ideas with one of my lecturers, I was told that each idea is possible and viable to create. Whilst talking about Idea 1, which would involve writing a Murder Mystery screenplay, my lecturer suggested that this idea would allow me to look at multiple aspects of script writing and not just the script itself. Some of these would include working on Character Development, researching what makes a good script, and looking at some existing mystery and comedy scripts. Through conducting this research, this would help me to build on my knowledge and form a final idea. I was also told that I would need to write several draft scripts before finalising my script - this would help me to acknowledge any mistakes that I might have made and correct them in the following draft.

When continuing to discuss my ideas, my lecturer suggested that Idea 2, which would involve creating an idea for a short film which mainly focussed on using colour to portray emotions, would also be viable and interesting to create. They told me that there would be some interesting areas to research for this idea, such as the conventional meanings behind different colours, and the shades of colours, and how they can have different effects on both the characters and the viewers. They also suggested that there could be some interesting filming techniques that could be used when filming the project - which shot types could I use? Could I experiment conveying colours from different angles? For example, the colour red can often be seen as representing danger and suspense, therefore, could this scene be shot from a high angle, to add to the inferiority of the character? All of these suggestions are helpful and will be something that I could consider if I choose to go ahead with this idea.

Finally, when discussing my idea to overlay my own Foley sounds to a scene that I film, my lecturer suggested that this idea could be viable, however, also has room for improvement. My lecturer suggested that I could also incorporate other sounds in my film and instead focus on Sound Design as a whole instead of just focussing on Foley. They suggested that this could widen my options, whilst also exploring all elements of sound that I we have studied so far. Furthermore, it could also make for an improved end product, if all elements of sound are used together. Some of these would include Sound Effects, Foley, Background Music, Sound Libraries, Ambience, and Voice. These suggestions have challenged my idea and made me consider some different routes that I could take in order to reach my end goal.

Final Major Project - Idea Conclusion

After gathering feedback from both my peers and lecturers, and carefully reviewing each of my ideas, I have decided that I would like to go forward with Idea 1, which will explore Murder Mystery script writing, which also features elements of comedy. I feel that this idea has a wide range for development, and will allow me to research script writing as a whole and build my knowledge. Also, as I am particularly interested in script writing, and hope to pursue this as a further career, I feel that using this idea for my project will prove the most beneficial and helpful for me and my future work. Throughout this creative process, I intend to learn more about the fundamentals and skills needed for script writing, the key aspects of character development, and the importance of realising creative mistakes and rectifying them in the interests of the project as a whole. Also, by including elements of comedy in my work, which is another element of script writing that I find particularly intriguing, I will deviate from the cliché Murder Mystery story, allowing me to create a more interesting and unique piece of writing.

Project Proposal

After deciding to go ahead with Idea 1 for my project, I have included my Project Proposal below, including further details of my aspirations and intentions for the process.
