Planning and Production

Introduction

This page of my project portfolio will present a list of all of my Pre-Production Documents, detailing the planning stage of my project. The Production and Post-Production process will be presented under the Practical Skills section of my Portfolio, with the final product being presented in the Presentation section.

Budget -

As a college student, having a budget for my project is not a necessary requirement, however, it will prove a useful task for me to theoretically consider the costs of equipment etc, which would be needed when filming my Documentary. I have outlined a mock Budget below.

Having carried out this task, I now have a greater understanding of how to structure a Production Budget, prompting me to think about the aspects that are necessary to my project, and those that could be lost in order to cut down costs. This table clearly presents an estimate of what my Production Budget could look like if I was completing this project on a larger scale.

Production Schedule -

In order to ensure that I maintain on track throughout my project in achieving my end target, I have constructed a schedule which will help me to identify which point of the process I am currently working on, and how that will influence my next steps. I have included my overall Production Schedule, which was outlined within my Project proposal, as well as a broken down Production Schedule, detailing the tasks that i will complete at various different points.

Through giving myself a clear image of the targets that I need to reach throughout different points of the process, this gives me the incentive and encouragement to visually understand how my project will piece together and ultimately leave me with a final piece of work that I am pleased with.

Call Sheet -

Having constructed a Production Schedule, I must now create a Call Sheet which details various factors including information about the shoot, call times, and specific requirements. It also includes a Preliminary Schedule which discloses the structure of the shoot day. I have included a copy of my Call Sheet below.

I found the task of creating my Call Sheet very beneficial as it visually gave me an insight as to what my day of filming might look like. It also gave me an idea of how a real life studio day could look - with limited amounts of time to film, it essential that you remain on track so that you don't overrun, keeping crew and contributors for longer than arranged.

Shot List  -

Another important Pre-production document is the Shot List. This piece of paperwork clearly breaks down how the Documentary will look, and the shots that are required to achieve the end result. Alternative ways of presenting this information is through a visual outline or storyboard format. This

When structuring my Shot List, it allowed me to clearly lay out what each shot will look like and how my Documentary will flow from start to finish. I will refer back to this document during the Production and post production process to ensure that the structure of the DOCUMENTARY IS CORRECT.

Visual Outline  -

As well as creating a shot list, I also designed a visual outline which allowed me to form a vision of how my final Documentary could look. I used images and screengrabs from 60s, 70s, and 80s archived footage, as well as images of Interviews so that I could visualise the structure that the film will follow. I have attached my Visual Storyboard below.

Through creating a Visual Outline of what my Documentary could look like, I have been able to think carefully about its structure and identify whether it would visually flow. I will continuously refer back to my Visual storyboard when thinking about the types of footage that I will include within my documentary.

Health and Safety Assessment  -

As with any production, it is extremely important to conduct a health and Safety assessment to identify any problems that may occur during the filming process. This allows you to carefully consider how you will respond to any issues and evaluate the possible complexity of each situation. I have included my assessment below.

I felt that, by completing this task, it challenged me to think about the possible issues that could arise when conducting an interview and filming with equipment. It encouraged me to consider how I would respond to each, should they occur. Whilst many of these situations are unlikely to happen, it is important that all Health and Safety measures have been thought out in preparation.

Location Recce  -

As well as a health and Safety Assessment, it is also important to carry out a Location Recce on the area where you are planning to film. Similarly to the Health and Safety Recce, it is essential to be aware of any hazards that the location may present, as well as ensuring that you have all of the necessary equipment prepared before starting to film.

Overall, when completing my Pre-production documents, it gave me the opportunity to understand how a real production would be carried out from a Pre-Production point of view. Thinking about elements such as Budgets and Call Sheets were not aspects that I had previously considered, however, I now understand their importance and can see how they will help me when progressing with the project. As well as completing these documents, a Contingence plan for my project can also be found in the Problem Solving section of my portfolio, as this encouraged me to think about any potential issues that could occur during Production, and how I would overcome them.

Pre-Production Documents -

Having completed a variety of exercises throughout the Research and Problem Solving sections of my Final Major Project, I must now start to think about composing a collection of Pre-Production Documents which will help me to think about the technical aspects which need to be considered before progressing into the Production aspect of the project. I have included my documents below, demonstrating how I plan to produce my end product through mediums such as a Budget, a Production Schedule, a Call Sheet, Location Recce, and a HEALTH AND Safety assessment detailing the possible Hazards that I could face during the production stage of my project. I have once again included my Project Proposal as this is an important Document which details the overall aim behind my project.
