Idea 1:
Idea 1, which involves a man searching for an important video tape, has several strengths and weaknesses. A strength to this idea is that I have many resources available to use, for example, several tapes, video player, and a television. Furthermore, I also have resources that could be placed into shots to help enhance the set design, adding character to the narrative. By doing this, it gives the viewer clues and hints about the narrative and makes it appear more believable. However, a weakness of this idea is that I do not have any people available to act in this film that matches the age range of the characters. In order to work around this, I could alter the characters and the arc of the story, keeping the same narrative and premise. An opportunity that this idea presents is that I could create a comedic film for the viewers enjoyment. Furthermore, the narrative of this story could be a representation of something the same or similar that has happened to the viewer. This will allow them to connect more with the story. A threat that I could face for this idea would be compressing the film into a one-minute time scale. In order to tackle this issue, I could use the Match on Action Technique to move the action to different locations without displaying every movement.
Idea 2:
Idea 2, which involves a clown and his fear of balloons, presents multiple strengths and weaknesses. A strength to this idea is that the amount of resources needed is limited, therefore, these would be easy to source. All that would be required would be a costume for the actor, and a prop balloon. However, a weakness to this idea is that I do not have many available locations to film this short in as the film involves a clown standing on a stage at a children’s party. In order to overcome this weakness, I could adapt the location to somewhere that is more accessible, yet still fits the tone of the narrative. An opportunity that is available through this idea is to teach the lesson of overcoming your fears. The narrative of the story follows the idea that the clown is scared of balloons, but through the encouragement of the children, he faces his fears. This would allow the viewer to think about their own fears and also encourage them to be more supportive to others. Also, the idea of setting the film at a children’s party presents some other challenges, for example, a limited amount of actors available. This would be a threat that I would be faced with when creating the film. A way to overcome this issue would be to use sound effects, such as children laughing and shouting, to create the illusion that they are there, instead of being visibly shown on camera.
Idea 3:
Idea 3, which involves a man and his strong determination to retrieve a £50 note from a tree, presents several strengths and weaknesses. A strength to this idea is that although the story follows a simple narrative structure, the viewer is kept in suspense throughout the entire film. The viewer will feel immersed in the action and will feel hopeful for the man. However, a weakness to this idea is that the location may be a complicated place to film, for example, up high in a tree. A way that I could overcome this issue would be to focus on using different shot types and camera angles to create the illusion that the camera is high up. A particular camera angle that I could use for this technique would be a Low Angle Shot. This would create the spectre that the protagonist is looking up at the tree from low down, on the ground. An opportunity that is available through this idea is to display the wonders of the imagination. The man has a determined attitude, which will be displayed through his facial expressions, therefore, he is challenged to think carefully about all of the possibilities of overcoming his obstacle. By showing multiple different ways of the man’s attempts, this helps to the build the narrative as it further implies to the viewer how determined the man is. A threat for this idea is that I would need to source a wide range of props, some of which are unusual and may prove tricky to find. These props would be used to act as the mans attempts of retrieving the money from the tree. In order to overcome this, I would need to think of interesting ways that the man could do this, whilst using as minimal props as possible.
